Federal incentives 2026

The federal battery credit ended for 2026 installs. Here is what that means.

The 30% federal tax credit for home solar and battery storage no longer applies to systems placed in service from January 1, 2026. Any quote for a 2026 install that still shows the credit needs re-pricing. State and utility programs are listed below only once they have been checked against the program's own page.

The federal program

Residential Clean Energy Credit (IRC §25D)

Administered by Internal Revenue Service · Status: closed — Ended for property placed in service after 31 December 2025

The 30% federal tax credit for home solar and battery storage no longer applies to systems placed in service from January 1, 2026.

What it is worth: 30% of qualified costs — for systems placed in service on or before 31 December 2025 only

Eligibility

  • Systems placed in service on or before 31 December 2025 can still be claimed on the 2025 return (Form 5695).
  • Systems placed in service from January 1, 2026 do not qualify.

The catch most people miss: A quote that still shows a 30% federal credit on a 2026 install is wrong. Ask the installer to remove it and re-price.

State programs, verified so far

Common questions

Is there still a federal tax credit for a home battery?
Not for systems placed in service from January 1, 2026. The Residential Clean Energy Credit (IRC §25D) ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025 under Public Law 119-21. Systems placed in service on or before that date can still be claimed on the 2025 return using Form 5695.
Are there state or utility battery incentives?
Some states and utilities run their own programs. An incentive page on this site lists a program only once it has been checked against the program’s own page — if your state has no page here, no program has been verified for it yet.
