Generac PWRcell 2 review
Modular storage with a generator integration option. Be clear about the battery configuration behind the output rating.

Our take
PWRcell 2 is worth considering when storage is part of a wider home backup plan, especially if you are also evaluating a standby generator. Its modular cabinets offer room to size the battery around your needs. The practical comparison is the complete Generac design: the number of modules, inverter, transfer equipment and any load controls. Do not carry specifications from the original PWRcell into a PWRcell 2 quote.
PWRcell 2 at a glance
Check the model in your quote against these published details.
| Battery capacity | 9–18 kWh per cabinet [1] |
|---|---|
| Two-cabinet storage | Up to 36 kWh per inverter [1] |
| AC output | Up to 11.5 kW with the specified two-cabinet configuration [1] |
| Architecture | AC-coupled PWRcell 2 system [1] |
| Limited warranty | 10 years; component terms apply [1] |
Capacity, continuous output and peak output measure different things. Compare like-for-like values for the complete configuration.
What is included in the system?
PWRcell 2 combines modular battery cabinets with an inverter and the equipment needed to isolate and supply the home. Generac also offers load-management and generator options. Ask for a component schedule that separates the battery system from optional accessories. This prevents a demonstration of the complete Generac ecosystem from becoming an assumption about what is included in your particular quote.
Conceptual energy flow. The equipment and connections depend on the installation.
What can it power during an outage?
The top output figure is conditional: Generac specifies a two-cabinet arrangement with sufficient modules. A smaller starting configuration should be assessed using its own output limits. For a generator-assisted design, request an explanation of when the generator starts, how charging is controlled and which loads the battery serves independently. Test the agreed behavior at handover.
A high power rating does not guarantee a long runtime. Backup duration also depends on charge level, reserve settings, appliance use and available solar.
Existing solar and future expansion
Adding storage to a home with panels
The AC-coupled design creates a route for storage alongside solar, but the installer must still check the existing inverter and outage operation. Ask whether rooftop generation will continue when the utility is disconnected and what happens as the battery fills. A proposal to replace working solar equipment should explain the specific technical reason.
Planning for more capacity
Modular storage lets you discuss an initial cabinet size and a later increase separately. Obtain the rules for adding modules, the maximum supported arrangement and the work needed to recommission it. Extra stored energy can extend runtime; extra output may require another cabinet or a different equipment configuration. Reserve physical space only after confirming the supported expansion path.
The advantages and the trade-offs
Reasons to shortlist it
- Battery cabinets can be configured with different module counts.
- The current system uses an AC-coupled architecture.
- Generac offers integration with its wider home energy equipment.
What to weigh up
- Maximum inverter output depends on having enough battery modules.
- Generator integration adds equipment and commissioning scope.
- A larger cabinet configuration needs space and an appropriate installation location.
Warranty, monitoring and support
Generac’s ten-year headline warranty should be read alongside the documents for the battery, inverter and any generator. Those are different products with different service needs. Establish whether one contractor supports the whole installation or whether service is split. Keep your system configuration, monitoring access and generator maintenance responsibilities in the handover documents.
A useful handover includes your equipment schedule, the applicable warranty documents, homeowner access to monitoring and a named service contact. Ask the installer to demonstrate the operating mode you are buying.
What affects the installed cost?
The battery module count is only one cost driver. Include cabinet count, inverter, transfer equipment, load controls and electrical work. If a generator is involved, compare that scope separately so the battery proposal remains intelligible. Two PWRcell 2 quotes can differ substantially while both using the same product name.
| Equipment | Battery quantity, inverter, gateway or transfer equipment and mounting |
|---|---|
| Electrical work | Panel changes, cable routes, protection and backed-up circuits |
| Delivery | Permits, installation, commissioning and monitoring handover |
| Aftercare | Workmanship cover, diagnostic visits and replacement labor |
Is PWRcell 2 right for your home?
Consider PWRcell 2 when you want a planned backup system with modular battery sizing and a clear path for supported Generac equipment. It is less compelling to choose a larger ecosystem solely because its brochure shows many accessories. Buy the combination that meets your loads, with the installation and service responsibilities spelled out.

Your questions, answered
Are PWRcell and PWRcell 2 specifications the same?
No. This review covers PWRcell 2. Confirm the generation and component part numbers in the proposal.
Does every configuration deliver 11.5 kW?
No. The maximum depends on the specified inverter and sufficient battery modules across the required cabinet arrangement.
Must I buy a generator?
Generator integration is a design option. Ask for a battery-only proposal if that is your intended project.

This is a research-based assessment of published manufacturer information, not a hands-on laboratory test or an owner-review average. Our judgments explain the buying implications of the equipment and its limitations. We do not assign star ratings, invent installation prices or infer local installer availability from a product page.
Check the current US model, configuration and warranty before ordering. Where regional compatibility or terms could not be established, we say so in the review. Shortlist Solar is an installer referral service; a quote request is optional and subject to participating-installer availability.
