Tesla Powerwall 3 review
An integrated solar inverter, substantial output and a choice between adding more power or more storage. Here is how those choices affect a home installation.

Our take
Powerwall 3 deserves a place on the shortlist when you want solar and battery storage designed together. Its built-in solar inverter can simplify the equipment list, while Expansion units offer a way to add stored energy. The buying decision becomes less obvious when you already own a working solar inverter: compare Tesla’s documented AC-coupled option with a new solar connection before paying to replace useful equipment.
Powerwall 3 at a glance
Check the model in your quote against these published details.
| Battery energy | 13.5 kWh per Powerwall 3 [1] |
|---|---|
| Continuous output | Up to 11.5 kW AC; installation settings apply [1] |
| Solar inverter | Integrated [1] |
| Energy expansion | Up to 3 Expansion units in the published system, with up to 4 Powerwall 3 units [1] |
| Limited warranty | 10 years; operating conditions apply [3] |
Capacity, continuous output and peak output measure different things. Compare like-for-like values for the complete configuration.
What is included in the system?
Powerwall 3 combines stored energy, a battery inverter and a solar inverter in one enclosure. A complete project still needs the equipment that disconnects the home from the grid during an outage. Ask the installer to separate the main Powerwall, any Expansion units and the gateway or switching arrangement on the proposal. That makes two apparently similar Tesla quotes much easier to compare.
Conceptual energy flow. The equipment and connections depend on the installation.
What can it power during an outage?
Power and energy answer different questions. The AC output rating helps determine which loads can run together; the stored kilowatt-hours help determine duration. An air conditioner also has a starting load that needs checking. Request an appliance schedule showing what stays backed up, what is shed and how much battery reserve remains available after an ordinary evening of bill management.
A high power rating does not guarantee a long runtime. Backup duration also depends on charge level, reserve settings, appliance use and available solar.
Existing solar and future expansion
Adding storage to a home with panels
Tesla publishes an AC-coupled design for installing Powerwall 3 alongside an existing solar inverter. That is a specific design option, not a promise that every older system can be retained unchanged. Your installer should identify the solar inverter, its behavior while the grid is down, and any changes to metering or electrical protection. For new solar, compare the integrated inverter design on its own merits.
Planning for more capacity
Choose between more storage and more output deliberately. Expansion units are useful when the home needs longer duration but the existing power stage is sufficient. A second complete Powerwall may serve a different design objective. Ask for both the usable energy and the permitted continuous output of the final arrangement, including any utility-imposed export setting.
The advantages and the trade-offs
Reasons to shortlist it
- Integrated solar inverter for a new solar-and-storage design.
- Separate Expansion units let a design add energy capacity.
- Tesla documents an AC-coupled route for existing solar.
What to weigh up
- An Expansion unit adds energy, not another independent inverter.
- A headline output rating does not establish how long your appliances will run.
- Backup switching equipment and the electrical work still belong in the quote.
Warranty, monitoring and support
The US limited warranty separates retained battery capacity from the operating modes and use conditions covered. A ten-year term alone does not describe labor, site access or every service expense. Keep the applicable warranty revision with your purchase documents and establish whether the installer or Tesla is your first contact. At handover, confirm app access, reserve settings and the agreed outage behavior.
A useful handover includes your equipment schedule, the applicable warranty documents, homeowner access to monitoring and a named service contact. Ask the installer to demonstrate the operating mode you are buying.
What affects the installed cost?
Compare installed scope rather than a battery-only advertised price. The number of Powerwalls and Expansion units, gateway or switch, panel work, cable route, permits and commissioning can change the total. Ask whether the proposal retains your existing solar inverter. This review does not publish a national installed-price average without a current, comparable quote sample.
| Equipment | Battery quantity, inverter, gateway or transfer equipment and mounting |
|---|---|
| Electrical work | Panel changes, cable routes, protection and backed-up circuits |
| Delivery | Permits, installation, commissioning and monitoring handover |
| Aftercare | Workmanship cover, diagnostic visits and replacement labor |
Is Powerwall 3 right for your home?
Shortlist Powerwall 3 for a new solar project or a documented retrofit where the proposed output and storage match your loads. Compare alternatives if you need very small increments of storage, have constraints around the installation location, or want to preserve an existing arrangement that the Tesla design would replace. The stronger proposal is the one that explains those trade-offs for your property.

Your questions, answered
Can Powerwall 3 work with existing solar?
Tesla documents an AC-coupled design. The installer still needs to confirm the existing inverter, required equipment and how solar operates during an outage.
Does an Expansion unit add more power?
It adds stored energy. Do not count it as a separate inverter when comparing continuous output or the number of appliances that can run together.
Will one Powerwall back up my whole home?
That depends on simultaneous loads, starting currents, reserve settings and desired duration. Have the proposal name the backed-up circuits and the assumptions used.
Sources and review method
This is a research-based assessment of published manufacturer information, not a hands-on laboratory test or an owner-review average. Our judgments explain the buying implications of the equipment and its limitations. We do not assign star ratings, invent installation prices or infer local installer availability from a product page.
Check the current US model, configuration and warranty before ordering. Where regional compatibility or terms could not be established, we say so in the review. Shortlist Solar is an installer referral service; a quote request is optional and subject to participating-installer availability.
