Home battery assessment
SMA solar and battery system savings & installer quotes
- Sunny Boy Smart Energy brings solar and storage into one design
- Select compatible batteries and the backup equipment you need
- Check state and utility rebates; eligibility varies
- Shortlist Solar-vetted installers, subject to availability
What could a battery save you?

Estimates use a general battery model, not a specific product. Actual savings depend on your electricity plan, usage and installation. Quotes depend on installer availability.
What goes into your SMA solar and battery system?
SMA’s Sunny Boy Smart Energy is a hybrid inverter for home solar and storage. The storage component and backup equipment should be named alongside the inverter rather than assumed from the SMA badge.
Existing solar and compatibility
An older Sunny Boy installation does not automatically have the same storage capabilities as Sunny Boy Smart Energy.
From your SMA assessment to a quote request
Start with your ZIP code, whether you have solar and your power bill. The assessment uses those answers to model battery savings, with assumptions shown alongside the result; it is not a performance calculation for a particular SMA model.
If you want to continue, your SMA preference and assessment answers carry into the quote form on this page.
A request is subject to participating-installer availability for your address and SMA. Ask any matched company who will do the work, and verify the crew’s current licensing, insurance and relevant manufacturer training.
Before you accept a SMA proposal
- Record the existing SMA model if this is an upgrade or replacement.
- Specify the proposed battery and the current US compatibility documentation.
- Include metering and backup equipment in the scope rather than quoting the inverter alone.
A closer look at your SMA installation plan
Identify the Sunny Boy model already installed before discussing an SMA upgrade. Older equipment should be recorded by its full label. Sunny Boy Smart Energy is a distinct hybrid-inverter discussion. Ask which parts of the existing solar can remain. Have the designer explain any proposed replacement. The assessment cannot infer storage connections from the manufacturer’s name alone.
Compare the SMA backup options through their actual household functions. Ask which depend on available sunlight. Identify which require the selected battery. Request the circuits and additional hardware in the proposal. Have the contractor distinguish daytime operation from overnight reserve. A general backup description should become a specific equipment and operating schedule before the installation is accepted.
Keep the SMA inverter, battery and backup records together. Request homeowner monitoring access at commissioning. Ask which controls require installer assistance. Have the selected backup function demonstrated. Record who supports retained solar equipment after the upgrade. Any later battery addition should produce an updated design and commissioning record for the completed arrangement.
Prepare your SMA quote checklist
Bring the SMA installer a recent electricity bill, your tariff name and any interval-usage data your utility makes available. Describe when the home uses power, when an EV is parked at home and whether heating, cooling or a pump dominates demand; the estimate’s bill band is a starting point rather than a replacement for those details.
Ask for the SMA proposal to separate equipment, electrical changes, permits, commissioning and any optional work. Confirm the usable capacity, continuous output and backup arrangement for the complete configuration being quoted, and identify exclusions before agreeing to an installation scope.
Have each SMA installer use the same list of appliances and the same backup priorities when preparing a design. If two proposals differ in battery quantity, controller equipment or circuits, ask for the reason in writing; a lower total may reflect a different job rather than a saving on an equivalent system.
Check the assumptions behind a SMA savings projection: electricity rates, export credits, daily usage, charging sources, reserve settings and future price increases. Request a comparison using your current tariff as well as any proposed tariff change, and keep bill savings separate from equipment cost, financing and the value you place on backup.
Before accepting a SMA contract, identify the company responsible for permits, utility permission, inspections and commissioning. Confirm the payment milestones and what happens if site inspection changes the equipment or electrical scope; do not treat an indicative assessment or an initial quote as a completed site design.
Keep the final SMA equipment schedule, warranty conditions and workmanship terms with the signed proposal. Ask who handles an installation fault, whether diagnosis and labor are covered and how to contact service if the original salesperson is unavailable; a manufacturer's equipment warranty does not by itself explain every installation responsibility.
SMA assessment questions
Will the assessment predict my exact SMA savings?
The SMA assessment does not identify your Sunny Boy model or choose its battery. Household solar and bill answers drive the modeled calculation. Have the designer assess the exact Sunny Boy Smart Energy configuration and selected backup option independently of the result.
Can I explore SMA if I already have solar?
An older Sunny Boy installation does not automatically have the same storage capabilities as Sunny Boy Smart Energy.
What happens when I request SMA quotes?
Your SMA preference stays attached to the assessment when contact details are requested. Matching uses current participating-installer eligibility and verified brand credentials where available, with no more than three matches and possibly none. Ask a responding company about the proposed hybrid inverter and battery arrangement, rather than only earlier Sunny Boy solar work.
Does an SMA assessment commit me to buying?
Exploring SMA storage here does not buy a hybrid inverter. There is no Shortlist fee for the household estimate or optional request. A battery selection, inverter replacement and installation contract are decisions to make separately after reviewing the contractor’s complete proposal.
